22nd Annual All Star Saturday - April 11, 2020

Overview / History

The Bruce Howard Recreation Center, located at 2505 North Cassady Avenue, has one of the most successful youth basketball leagues in the city of Columbus. Due to the program’s popularity and large number of gifted players, the 1st Annual All-Star Basketball Saturday event began in 1999. This highly successful event was hosted by the Northeast Recreation Center Community Council and sponsored by Capital Transportation, Inc.

In 1999, the Bruce Howard Recreation Center, with valuable support and sponsorship from Capital Transportation, and co-sponsorship from Pepsi-Cola, Conn’s, Krispy Kreme, Zeno’s Activewear, and a host of volunteers, started the Capital Transportation All-Star Basketball Saturday. Since the inception of All Star Saturday, the basketball event has attracted the best youth basketball players from all over Central Ohio. The best players are selected from four age groups ranging from 6-8, 9-11, middle school and high school to compete in the all-star games.

With the growth in All Star Saturday each year, the focus of the event expanded from predominately basketball in the early years to incorporate other activities that the entire family could enjoy for an entire day. Last year’s event drew over 2,500 people during the course of the day, and, we expect even greater participation in 2018 with an estimated 2,500-3,000 attendees. Now in its 20th season, All Star Saturday is a mainstay in the community every Easter Saturday. The focus on the event is to give back to the community we serve. There is no cost for admission to any of the events, and free food and refreshments such as hot dogs, soft drinks, doughnuts and popcorn, are free to the public. Clowns, balloons and face-painting are just some of the entertainment provided for the smaller children.

The foundation of All Star Saturday is two main events. The largest Easter Egg Hunt in Central Ohio always kicks off All Star Saturday at 10:00 AM, followed by All Star Saturday Basketball from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM. A half-time Slam Dunk Contest will also be part of this year’s basketball program.

Sponsors

A significant reason for the tremendous success of the event is the on-going support of our corporate sponsors; Walmart, Giant Eagle, Fifth Third Bank, Donatos, Jimmy John's, Dayspring Christian CDC, Columbus Black.com, Zeno’s Activewear, Buckeye Prep, Power 107.5 FM, Boom 106.3 FM, Magic 95.5, and Radio One. These co-sponsors have committed both in-kind and dollars to support All Star Saturday. This year, we are fortunate to secure participation of Radio One, Power 107.5 FM,  Boom 106.3 and Magic 95.5 FM, to assist in advertising and promoting All Star Saturday.

Metropolitan Youth Foundation of Central Ohio is the host of the 2020 All-Star Saturday.  The goal is to continue and expand Metropolitan Youth Foundation of Central Ohio and All Star Saturday so that we can offer even more support for Columbus' children.  Metropolitan Youth Foundation of Central Ohio is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping underserved youth realize their full potential through a focus on community, education, nutrition and fitness.

This is the 22nd year for our event and over 2,500 people attending the event in 2019. We are optimistic that attendance will exceed 3,000 people in 2020, with the first event being the Easter Egg Hunt, starting at 10:00 a.m. The basketball games begin at 11:00 AM, and will last most of the day, ending with the presentation of the championship trophies at 5:00 p.m. The day long event provides our sponsors with direct exposure to the large crowds in attendance, as well as all the media promotions and print advertising leading up to the event. Also, all sponsors names will be listed on all signs and promotional materials related to the event.
